The crisis initially emerged from a dispute over the rights of Christian denominations in the holy sites of Palestine. However, this religious disagreement was merely the visible aspect of a much broader geopolitical conflict. Russia sought to expand its influence within Ottoman territories and to strengthen its role as the protector of Orthodox Christians, while Britain and France feared that Russian expansion toward the Mediterranean would threaten their strategic interests and vital trade routes.
