1910 Egypt, Sidi Gaber El Sheikh Mosque - Alexandria
Sidi Gaber El-Sheikh Mosque and its surrounding area - Alexandria, 1910 AD
The Sidi Gaber El-Sheikh Mosque is one of the most famous religious and historical landmarks in Alexandria. Its name is not limited to the mosque itself, but has also been given to an entire neighborhood and a major train station, one of the city's most famous.
The mosque is associated with Sheikh Gaber Al-Ansari, a prominent figure in Sufism and Islamic scholarship, who came to Alexandria and settled in the Raml district. There, he established a small zawiya (Sufi lodge) for worship and teaching, which over time evolved into a mosque bearing his name. Sources indicate that the Sheikh passed away in 697 AH (1298/1299 CE) and was buried in the mausoleum attached to the mosque on its southern side.
The site began as a simple zawiya around the mid-7th century AH (13th century CE). A mosque was later built on its ruins in the late 19th century. The old mosque, with its serene architecture and proximity to the Sidi Gaber train station, appears in many historical photographs of Alexandria.
In 1955 AD, the old mosque was demolished, and the current mosque was erected in its place, according to the Alexandria Governorate and local historical sources.
Located in a vibrant area of Alexandria, near Port Said Street, tram lines, and the railway station, the mosque has become a prominent landmark for both residents and visitors. The shrine of Sidi Gaber, situated within the mosque, stands as a testament to the spiritual significance this site has held for centuries. Beyond its religious value, the mosque is an integral part of the city's architectural heritage, embodying a blend of popular history, Sufi traditions, and the modern transformations Alexandria underwent in the 20th century.
